The Print Behind the Magic: Why Christmas Needs Ink, Paper & a Bit of Sparkle
Have you ever thought about why the festive season feels comforting before it’s even begun …? Christmas has a texture all of its own. The soft rustle of wrapping paper… the satisfying sound of a Christmas card landing on the doormat … the glow of a high street window dressed for December … All of these moments share a hidden ingredient and that is “PRINT!”
Getting You in the Mood – The Magic of a Christmas Window

Nothing ushers in the warmth and wonder of Christmas quite like a festive window display. From London’s Oxford Street icons to the independent shops on your local high street, windows come alive with dazzling scenes that catch your eye, spark your imagination and draw out your Christmas spirit. They can be so magical, in fact, that even the Ebeneezer Scrooges of the world feel their inner ’bah humbug‘ soften.
Every December, hoards flock to London’s legendary department stores for the first glimpse of the season’s sparkle – Selfridges, Liberty, Fortnum & Mason, Harvey Nichols – to name but a few, each unveiling window displays that feel like theatre. Year after year, their windows become little worlds of their own – snowy forests, Santa’s workshop, whimsical storybooks with glittering typography and oversized gift boxes. Crowds gather, the cameras flash and windows become a Christmas attraction all by themselves.
Last year Selfridges on Oxford Street displayed a ’More the Merrier‘-themed Christmas window displaying thousands of baubles, garlands and LED lights with a very fun vibe. And this year they’ve gone for a nostalgic Disney-themed display in their twelve windows.
Last year Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge collaborated with the Design Museum for their own gothic fantasy theme, inspired by none other than Tim Burton. You can find a great set of images in the Retail Gazette’s write-up, which showcases the displays in all its detail. While in Picadilly, Fortnum and Mason’s 2024 Christmas Window used woodland creatures and festive animals to draw the crowds.
This year Fortnum and Mason invite you to “Discover a jubilant, Kaleidoscopic celebration of colour and character, where unicorns prance beneath shimmering disco balls, narwhals leap through waves, and a breathtaking fireworks display serves as the backdrop to two love birds perched in a tree.” The full stories behind the displays is always available on their website – it’s well worth a look. And don’t forget that the entire façade of the building is also transformed into a giant advent calendar!
Without doubt, each store invests imagination, time and energy into these inspiring projects. But look closely at them and you’ll spot a secret ingredient … much of the magic is crafted through the layering of printed materials, including:
• backdrops
• layered vinyl decals
• cut-out characters
• frosted letterings
• shimmering silhouettes
• giant contour-cut props
And the truth is most other businesses can create this magic too – whether you are a small boutique, a bakery, a florist, a café or hair salon. With some imagination, thoughtful storytelling and well-executed print, your window could be every bit as captivating.
At iQ Digital House, we help bring these ideas to life through our graphic design and large format digital printing services – from window graphics and vinyl decals to backdrops, wall graphics, banners and signage. It’s remarkable what a good story and printed layers can do to stop someone in their tracks.
So, this December, when you’re out and about, take a moment to admire the different window displays. They are designed to inspire, capture your attention and even melt the heart of the biggest Grinch among us. And remember that whilst Christmas may be the “big one”, it’s not the only moment on the calendar for windows to shine. There is also Valentine’s Day, Easter, summer sales, Halloween, spring or autumn launches, winter events – shops can refresh their look constantly.
Why Christmas Feels Better in Print
It’s not just shop windows that rely on print at Christmas. So many other things depend upon the feel of paper, the richness of the colours, imagination and, of course, design. From the Victorian origins of Christmas cards and festive packaging to today’s tags, menus and advent calendars, print has always shaped our shared sense of what Christmas feels like. A personalised gift or even a simple branded sticker from a small business can spark the season’s warmth.
At iQ Digital House, we’ve taken your ideas and have brought them to life through a wide range of printed projects:
• gift boxes and bespoke packaging
• personalised chocolate bar and other festive treat wrappers
• festive menus, programmes and invitations for events and celebrations
• calendars for businesses, artists and photographers
• advent and desk calendars
• stickers, labels and notecards
All through our small format digital print services
• Christmas fayre signage, posters and banners created using our large format print services
• school Christmas cards and other year-round keepsakes via our fundraising iQ Cards
As the season unfolds and the streets fill with festive colours, take a moment to enjoy the printed touches all around you. The card on the mantelpiece … the tags on the gifts … the window that makes you stop and smile … These are the threads that stitch the season together.
